A Child Protective Services caseworker has testified that a 16-year-old girl accused of putting her newborn in a Houston trash bin this week didn't know she was pregnant and thought the baby was dead after giving birth in a bathtub.
The Houston Chronicle reports the caseworker testified Wednesday during an emergency custody hearing for the boy. A judge gave CPS temporary custody.
A maintenance worker discovered the infant Tuesday in an apartment complex trash bin.
Police say that once the girl has been released from the hospital, investigators will speak with prosecutors to determine if any charges will be referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation.
CPS officials are trying to determine if there are family members who can care for the boy when he's released from the hospital.
