Some college students in Southeast Texas have started a class project to improve the look of a cemetery while learning about welding.
The Galveston College students are targeting Broadway Cemetery and its rusted, bent gates.
The Galveston County Daily-News reported Saturday that members of the introduction to welding class will design and fabricate new iron gates.
Instructor Evan McClimans said it gives students a chance to work on a project that can actually be seen and benefit Galveston.
The project is also a competition for the estimated 30 students. Each must come up with a design and blueprint. A winner will be chosen, and the class will work together to fabricate new gates to the cemetery going back to at least the 1830s.
