State School Resident's Death Ruled Homicide

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death of a 53-year-old resident of the Denton State School a homicide.

Janice Campbell died Friday in a Fort Worth hospital of a closed head injury suffered earlier in the month, the medical examiner's office said. She had been taken to the hospital from the school on March 3.

A state official said Sunday that the incident in which Campbell was injured was an accident. Ceilia Fedorov, with the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, said another resident who is profoundly mentally disabled accidentally pushed Campbell and she fell.

The state is considering a major overhaul of the state school system after an investigation last year found hundreds of cases of abuse and neglect.
