Texas has purchased three buildings across from the Alamo's main entrance, a key early step in the planned major makeover of the historic shrine.
The General Land Office said Wednesday it paid $14.4 million for the buildings, which currently house such attractions as Ripley's Haunted Adventure.
Combined, they encompass nearly 100,000 square feet. Funding came from $25 million the Legislature approved this summer for Alamo restoration.
The buildings occupy part of the Alamo's footprint when its original compound was built in 1724.
That included the headquarters where Alamo defenders leader William B. Travis wrote seeking reinforcements in 1836.
Exactly what will become of the buildings, or the space they occupy, isn't yet known. A master restoration plan sponsored by the state and San Antonio won't be ready until next year.
