A veteran's missing service dog has been found in Texas nine months after it went disappeared from a North County home.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Alexandra Melnick traveled to Aubrey, Texas last week and was reunited with her German shepherd Kai.
Vista Detective Debra Hutches said Melnick visited the home on a tip and confirmed it was her dog before contacting Texas law enforcement.
A hearing is scheduled Wednesday to determine Melnick's ownership of Kai.
Kai went missing after Thanksgiving from Melnick's backyard. The two have been together since Melnick left the Marine Corps in 2013. She trained Kai to wake her from nightmares, ease her insomnia and act as a boundary protector.
Melnick returned from Afghanistan with a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.
