Some Residents of Flood-Evacuated Texas Checking Damage

Residents of Angleton in South Texas are checking their damaged property now that floodwaters are receding.

Floodwaters are receding in parts of South Texas and residents of some areas evacuated since last week are getting a chance to check their damaged property.

Brazoria County has begun limited re-entry, via boat or land vehicle, to formerly flooded areas as some evacuation orders remain. Some roads remained closed Sunday due to lingering high water or damage.

County Judge Matt Sebesta, in a statement Saturday, said people must show proof of residency to be allowed in to evaluate property or retrieve supplies.

President Barack Obama on Saturday declared 12 Texas counties federal disaster areas due to heavy rain and flooding since late May.

The declaration covers Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Fort Bend, Grimes, Hidalgo, Hood, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Travis, Waller and Washington counties. Residents are eligible to seek federal assistance.
