SMU's Larry Brown “In Awe” Watching Cowboys OTAs

He’s been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, won an NBA title and NCAA championship, and led USA basketball to two gold medals.  But Wednesday, SMU coach Larry Brown – who has won more than 2,600 games as a basketball coach – was fascinated with what he saw as he observed Dallas Cowboys Organized Team Activities from the sidelines.

“I was just in awe of being here and watching them practice and work hard,” Brown said.  “I’ve been a huge fan of Jason (Garrett), the staff and the team since I’ve been here.  Watching them, the attention to detail, how direct and honest (Garrett) is… it was neat hearing him coach them and how they accept it.”

Usually accompanied by Cowboys players (mostly quarterback Tony Romo), Garrett frequently attends SMU basketball games to watch Brown display “great wisdom about life and about how you can coach your team better.”  In his post-practice press conference, Garrett opened up about what his relationship with Brown has meant.

“I can speak for myself, he’s helped me immensely,” Garrett said.  “I told our team afterwards, he’s arguably as good a coach in any sport that there ever was, if you think about his accomplishments.  He’s just a wonderful guy and he’s a generous guy.  We’ve taken our staff down there to watch practice.  We’ve become close with the SMU basketball program.  He’s been so welcoming to us.  There’s just a really high-level of coaching that’s on display every time you’re around him.”
