An investigation is under way after a 55-year-old mother was found dead Wednesday night inside her home on Kariba Lane, Denton police said.
Police were called out for a welfare check after Ying Ying "Jennifer" Maik did not show up for work, and her relatives were not able to reach her by phone.
Her nephew, who recently moved out of the victim's home, let police inside and they found Maik fatally shot in her bedroom.
Maik was found dead next her bed with a gunshot wound to the head.
They also discovered the car she had been driving, a 2007 Honda Fit with Texas Plates 565NGL, was missing. It was later found a few blocks away. Witnesses told police they saw a black truck at the same location.
Police said William Xu, a former co-worker of Maik, is a person of interest in the case. Investigators said he turned himself in Thursday night to Palmer police in Ellis County.
Xu and Maik worked together at the Clark Dining Hall on the University of North Texas campus, police said. Maik worked as a dining services manger. Police said they do not believe Xu and Maik were romantically involved.
