Police responded to a call at the Park Springs Townhomes on Alma Drive in Plano at about 7:15 p.m. Two dogs, which appeared to be Shepherd mixes, escaped a yard. Police said the dogs are accused of biting six people at the complex, before one of the dogs made its way to nearby Wagon Wheel Park.

Officers chased the animal while warning children and adults to clear the area, according to police.

Police said the dog attempted to go after a jogger before turning back and biting a Plano police officer, who drew his weapon and shot the dog.

According to police, the two animals are known to both police and animal control following previous calls involving the dogs.

Police didn’t immediately know the extent of the victim’s injuries, but say the officer was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Javier Mendez told NBC 5 he was in his yard when he heard people screaming.  He and his fiancée went outside and both were attacked.

“I’m trying to get the dogs away so I got their attention, the dogs they came to me and bit me on the back right of my left cheek of my behind,” said Mendez, “It stings a bit, it will get better.”

Mendez described the dogs as large – one white, one black. He says the white one bit him, the same dog Plano police said was shot.

According to police, the other dog returned to its yard and was taken into custody by animal control officers.

Plano police confirm they shot a dog after it and another dog attacked several people, including a 5-year-old girl. The shooting happened at a busy park on Sunday evening.
