Body of Missing Man at Lake Grapevine Recovered

The man fell off a sailboat around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday

A Flower Mound man missing after falling off a sailboat and into Lake Grapevine Tuesday night was recovered Thursday afternoon, officials say.

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. the victim was recovered after the Grand Prairie Fire Department Marine unit confirmed the image with their sonar and the Grapevine Fire Department Dive team was called in to make the recovery.

The man's body was turned over to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner for positive identification.

The Grapevine Fire Department and Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens searched for the man from 9:30 p.m. until after midnight before they called off the search for the night.

The search continued in the lake and on the shoreline Wednesday.

Fire officials said they had two boats on the lake all day Wednesday for the Fourth of July and would use those to assist in the search effort.

Crews started the search Thursday morning again at 7:30 a.m. back on the lake. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department used sonar equipment to help with the search.

Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Grapevine Fire Department said the 19-year-old man was reported missing after he fell off the sailboat. The incident happened around the same time high winds swept through North Texas, though it was unclear what caused the man to fall overboard.

Fire officials said the boat had drifted away from where the incident occurred, making the search area harder to define. High winds and darkness further complicated the effort.

The Grapevine Fire Department urged everyone to wear a lifejacket when on a boat or swimming in open water.
