San Antonio-Area Police Chief Fired

A San Antonio-area police chief has been fired nearly two months after the unsolved slaying of an off-duty officer.

Balcones Heights police Chief Henry Dominguez was fired Tuesday. City spokesman Lorenzo Nastasi says Dominguez, who can appeal to the City Council, was dismissed based on results of an internal investigation.

Police believe two masked suspects opened fire May 4 as Officer Julian Pesina closed a tattoo shop that he co-owned. Pesina also had a number of tattoos.

Dominguez faced a May 20 complaint from Officer Kenneth Ortiz, who alleged the chief ignored warnings about Pesina possibly having gang-related ties.

Dominguez, who was put on paid leave following the complaint, has denied the allegations.

A message left with an attorney for Dominguez was not immediately returned Tuesday.
