Salmonella Threat Prompts Pistachio Recall

Austinuts Wholesale Inc. said Tuesday it is voluntarily recalling some of its packages of pistachio kernels, Deluxe Nut Mix and Gourmet Nut Mix because the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

The company said the products were distributed only in Texas and no illnesses have been reported.

Austinuts said in a news release that the pistachios had been shipped in December from Torn and Glasser Inc., which issued the recall.

The items covered in the recall and the lot numbers are:

-- Pistachio Kernels, raw or salted, only lot numbers ending with "SE" with packing codes of P3598 through P0499.

-- Deluxe Nut Mix, salted, lot number P008913201AW through P026913201AW. Lot numbers must fall between P0089 and P0269.

-- Gourmet Nut Mix, salted, lot number P364814401AW through P026914401AW. Lot numbers must fall between P3648 and P0269.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

The company asked retailers to pull the recalled material from the store shelves and urged consumers who had purchases any of the affected items to destroy them.
