Man Fatally Shot After Ramming Vehicle Into Police SUV as Officer Responds to Family Violence Call

A wanted man ramming his SUV into a police vehicle was fatally shot by a Rockwall police officer Thursday, police say.

Rockwall police said officers were in the area of the Bent Creek condominiums on the 300 block of Lake Meadows Drive looking for a known suspect accused earlier in the day of aggravated assault toward a family member.

When officers spotted the man, police said he began ramming his SUV into police vehicles.

NBC 5 has learned one officer first fired non-lethal beanbags at the man and that a second officer then shot the man using his service weapon. The man, whose name has not yet been released, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Officials told NBC 5 Thursday afternoon the man had an active felony warrant for family violence and officers believed he was in the area due to the incident reported earlier in the day.

The officer involved in the fatal shooting has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, while the shooting is investigated. The officer who fired the non-lethal round remains on duty. The Rockwall County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation.
