Rockwall County Mom Trapped During Tornado

EF-3 tornado ravages several neighborhoods

One of the strongest twisters in North Texas on Tuesday ripped through several Rockwall County neighborhoods.

Officials said at least 30 homes were damaged by the EF-3 tornado. In an unincorporated area just south of Royse City, the Bent Tree subdivision caught the brunt of the storm.

Brooke Barnes was trapped in her bathroom protecting her 2 year-old-son while on the phone with her husband, Braden.

"It was scary, being trapped, but it looked like the roof over the bathtub was about to collapse so I knew we had to find a way out," she said.

Her husband said he could hear the house being ripped apart.

"I mean, I heard it all on the phone, and it was probably over quicker than you would think," he said. I heard my son screaming."

First responders rescued at least four people who took shelter in the middle of their homes but were unable to get out.

The tornado ravaged at least 30 homes in Bent Tree.

But the Barnes said the storm spared what is most important.

"We'll take it one day at a time, and I'm sure there will be ups and downs, but the most important things are safe, and that's us," Brooke Barnes said.
