Report: Driver was Inattentive in Central Texas Bridge Crash

A state report is faulting the driver of a tractor-trailer that caused the partial collapse of an Interstate 35 bridge when its load hit the overpass in March.

The Texas Department of Public Safety report says the semitrailer's driver, 41-year-old Valentin Martinez, was inattentive and hauling an illegal oversize load when he struck the unfinished bridge in Salado.

An Arlington man was killed when a portion of a concrete beam landed on his pickup truck. Martinez and two other drivers were injured.

The Central Texas interstate was shut down for hours as crews worked to remove vehicles and debris from the highway.

The Austin American-Statesman reports authorities say no charges have been filed. An investigation is ongoing.
