Renters Lose Memories in Garland Storage Facility Fire

Dozens of people in Garland are sifting through what’s left of their belongings after a massive fire destroyed part of Lone Star Storage.

Firefighters fought the flames for hours Monday night on South Shiloh Road.

When the fire was finally extinguished, the level of destruction brought some renters to tears.

“People come here during rough times in their lives because they need a place to store everything they own when they fall on hard times,” said property manager Lauren Busby.

The upper level of one building was virtually gutted by the fire, leaving the lower level with water damage.

“We’re going to have to start from the beginning – from the bottom up,” Carolyn Ganez said.

The stories of some of the other lost property is even harder to stomach.

“He’s been living on the streets for the past five years, and he finally got a miracle, and he got a place to live and this happened before he ever moved his things out,” Busby said.

Charred picture albums and burned mementos dot the blackened units.

“A lot of it is irreplaceable and I hope the memories they have will be enough for them,” Busby said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
