Relief Efforts Continue After Collin County Tornadoes

Local church volunteers have been on the ground since Sunday

A relief center is open and ready to help tornado victims in eastern Collin County.

Representatives from the state, county and various volunteer assistance organizations opened the Collin County Disaster Relief Center at the Best Community Center, at 154 S. Main St. in Farmersville, on Wednesday.

For storm victims who need assistance, the center will act as a central location for supplies and support services. It will also serve as a rally point for coordinating volunteers who are looking to help with clean-up and recovery efforts in the area, as well as those interested in providing resources or equipment in those efforts.

Additional operations, including the American Red Cross, are available at the First Baptist Church of Farmersville, at 124 S. Washington St.

Those who want to help can register at the Best Community Center.

Long before the disaster center opened, local churches in Collin County had been collecting donations and helping residents affected by Saturday's deadly tornado.

"If you look at this sanctuary, it's supposed to be full of people. Instead, it is full of clothes for people," said the Rev. Stan Welch, pastor at First Baptist Church of Copeville. "Around this area, Copeville Baptist is where you need to be coming if you need help. We don't care what denomination you are. We're here to help."

The small team of volunteers from the church have collected clothes, canned goods, toiletries and food. The items are available for tornado victims in Collin County.

"A church is made up of people. It's not the building, but we have a building that can serve a lot of folks" said Welch.

Volunteers from the church have also delivered hot meals to victims in Copeville.
