Refugio County Jail to be Renamed for Ex-Sheriff

Refugio County commissioners have approved renaming the county jail in honor of former Sheriff James "Jimmy" Hodges, who died last month at the age of 74.

Commissioners approved the renaming of the Refugio County Jail on Tuesday.

Refugio County Judge Rene Mascorro told the Victoria Advocate, "I think it's very fitting. It's a small gesture to thank the family for their sacrifice."

The Hodges family will be involved in the naming process.

Hodges, who died Sept. 30, served as sheriff from 1976 to 2004. During that 28-year tenure, he was known for his tenacity in tracking down people transporting drugs and his love for fighting crime. It was his drug busts that funded the county jail in 1996.
