With the new American Airlines merger a done deal, passengers are now able to reap some of the benefits of traveling on either airline.
Fort Worth-based American Airlines Group announced Tuesday that reciprocal benefits for loyalty program members are in place and that whether members fly on American Airlines or US Airways, they can earn and redeem miles for their respective programs.
Elite travelers can also take advantage of other loyalty benefits including priority seating, First and Business Class check-ins, priority security screening and boarding and free checked bags on both airlines.
Certain members of the loyalty programs, American's AAdvantage program or US Airways Dividend Miles, will also have access to both the American Admirals Clubs or US Airways Clubs.
"More customer benefits, including a codeshare agreement, US Airways' entry to the oneworld alliance and co-location of additional ticket counters and gates, will roll out as the two airlines continue to combine operations," an airline spokesperson said Tuesday.
US Airways will exit the Star Alliance on March 30, 2014.
The company said that, for now, the loyalty programs for American Airlines and US Airways will remain separate, but the plan is to eventually combine the two programs into one loyalty program. A time line for when that will happen has yet to be released.
