Recently Released Report Looks At Crime Near SMU Campus

Crime near and on college campuses continue causing concern across the nation and North Texas is not immune.

Southern Methodist University recently released its annual "Security and Fire Safety Report" for 2015.

Statistics in the report show two aggravated assaults on campus in 2015 and six aggravated assaults handled by Dallas police in an area near East Campus.

"In 2015 six aggravated assault reports were made to the Dallas Police Department in areas of the DPD jurisdiction next to SMU’s East Campus, east of Central Expressway. While any case of aggravated assault near campus is concerning, overall case numbers remain low," SMU Campus Police Chief Rick Shafer said in a statement.

None of the six off-campus aggravated assault cases involved students.

"SMU officers patrol the SMU campus 24/7, including the East Campus. We provide security awareness, crime prevention and self-defense training to students, faculty and staff members," Shafer said. "We are available day and night, and can be reached on emergency phones across campus."

According to Campus Police there have been no reports of aggravated assault on or in that area near East Campus so far in 2016.
