Jim Sundberg is retiring from the Texas Rangers' front office at the end of the season, 40 years after his big-league career began as a catcher with the club.
The 63-year-old Sundberg said Wednesday he will step down as senior executive vice president while remaining involved in community relations in a part-time role.
Sundberg spent more than 30 years with the Rangers as a player, executive, broadcaster and minor league instructor. He played his first 11 1/2 seasons in Texas and returned in 1988, a year before he retired. He still holds the AL record for games caught in one season (155 in 1975).
The three-time All-Star won a World Series with Kansas City in 1985.
Sundberg joined the Rangers' front office 10 years ago.
