Rangers Fans Show Mixed Reactions to Astros World Series Celebrations

On the heels of a historic World Series win for the Houston Astros, controversy brewed in North Texas as to whether the region should join in the celebration.

The Astros play in the same division as the Texas Rangers, and prior to Wednesday's Game 7 clincher, neither Lone Star State franchise had won a World Series title.

Immediately after the Astros' win, the Omni Hotel in Dallas used its massive LED wall to showcase the word "Astros" several stories high.

"We lit up right away in celebration! We're a city that supports its Texas roots," said Omni marketing manager Amber Bufkin.

By morning, social media was flooded with comments.

"Real fans don't root for their rivals. Only bandwagoners do that," said David Zeve.

"I'd have no problem celebrating the Astros win last night if they were still in the National League. The minute they came to the American League West, they became the enemy. I still think it was a hell of a series, and it was very entertaining, but I still hate the Astros," said Jason Ryan Aguirre.

Others joined the celebration.

"I'm a Rangers fan, but I am a Texan. So the Rangers weren't represented in the game, but the Astros were, so obviously I'm going to root for the Astros. That's just the way it is," said Kevin Banks.

The conversation also turned to Hurricane Harvey and how it magnified the team's win for a city still working to rebuild.

"With everything they went through this year, I'm happy for them," said Kevin Lee.

"Regardless, Harvey or not, it's Texas, Houston, Texas," said Christy Foster.

Arleen Knapp said the debate over whether Rangers fans should cheer on the Astros was brewing in her own home. She says there was animosity between her and her son after she traded the red and blue for Astros orange for the series.

"Support the Texas team, period. Rangers… wish we could've had them there. But they didn't do it. Astros did. Go Astros," Knapp said.
