Ranchers Try to Rebuild Beef Herds in North Texas

Lakes and rivers are full, but ranchers in Texas are still dealing with drought.

Years of drought forced many ranchers to cut back on their cattle, and it can take years to rebuild herds.

That's why the Collin County Agriculture Extension is holding a cattle auction as part of its "Rebuilding the Beef Herds" initiative.

The auction is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Myers Park & Event Center.

"[The goal is to] give those that had to cull back or sell out their herds an opportunity to buy country-raised, high-quality cattle from these producers," Agriculture Extension Agent Rick Maxwell said.

The auction was started in 2014. Maxwell said it is in direct response to declining cattle numbers over the past decade of drought.
