Print Shops See Rise in Anti-Gun Sign Requests

North Texas print shop officials said businesses are calling them for signs that restrict people from carrying a gun into their stores.

"Mainly banks," are the first businesses calling according to Arlington Fast Signs Production Manager Lance Tucker. "Also, public venues like the two stadiums here."

The new open carry law in Texas begins Jan. 1, 2016. It allows anyone with a concealed handgun license to openly carry a gun in public.

If businesses don’t want guns to be allowed in their store, they must display specific signs at their entrances. Some of the sign requirements stated in the Texas Penal Code:

  • Contrasting colors
  • 1-inch tall text
  • Block letters
  • Specific wording in English and Spanish
  • Be displayed in a "conspicuous manner clearly visible to the public at each entrance to the property."

"The business will pick up here in the next two to three weeks," Tucker said. "I see a lot of customers calling after Jan. 1 and saying, 'Hey, I need or I want to display that law at their discretion.'"
