Priest Free on Bond, Awaits Retrial for Assault

A 67-year-old Texas priest is free on bond while he awaits a new trial on charges of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy in the 1990s.

The Eastland County Sheriff's Department said the Rev. Thomas Teczar posted $30,000 bond earlier this month.

Teczar must wear an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet until his second trial next month over the alleged abuse when the priest was in Ranger.

He was convicted in 2007 on three counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of indecency with a child. He was sentenced to 25 years on each assault charge and 15 years on the indecency count. The terms were concurrent.

An appeals court last year overturned the conviction -- in part due to problems with establishing a witness as an expert.

Teczar didn't immediately comment Tuesday.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the diocese is in the process of defrocking him.
