Austin police have charged a woman who they said attacked her blind housemate with a hammer.
Cynthia Chayer, 57, was being held at the Travis County Jail Monday on $300,000 bond. She has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police and firefighters were dispatched to an Austin group home Thursday after a fire was reported. Two women told police that Chayer was upset about getting a new roommate and became violent. They said Chayer hit the victim on the arm and back of the head with a hammer.
Police said Chayer exited the smoke-filled house with the hammer. She told police she used it to try to kill the victim.
Arson investigators determined the fire was intentionally set.
Online jail records didn't indicate an attorney for Chayer.
