Police to Investigate Their Own

Fort Worth police chief establishes new investigative unit

Fort Worth police chief Jeff Halstead announced the establishment of a special unit to investigate criminal allegations against department employees.

The Special Investigative Unit consists of two sergeants and two detectives.

Before the SIU, criminal investigations were conducted by other units within the police department. The SIU will also conduct audits to review effectiveness and efficiency of operations with the Fort Worth police department.

Fort Worth police have come under fire recently for their involvement in a controversial raid at the Rainbow Lounge and the death of a 24 year old man. Michael Jacobs died after an officer used a taser to subdue him during an arrest in April.

Chief Halstead announced there would be no disciplinary action against officer Stephanie Phillips, but the case has been turned over to the grand jury and F.B.I for review.
