Speeding Driver Crashes With Kid in Car: Police

Wylie PD estimated speed before crash at over 100 mph

A man and a child are recovering in a hospital Monday morning after the car the man was driving slammed into a utility pole, according to Wylie police.

A Wylie police officer had spotted a black BMW at an estimated speed over 100 mph just before 11:00 p.m. Sunday, headed northbound on Highway 78.

Before the officer could pull out to pursue the vehicle, she saw the car turn onto Kirby Street and then saw a bright flash of light, according to police.

The car struck a utility pole and took out the power transformers and the electric, phone and cable lines at the top of it.

A witness to the crash told NBC 5 that the night sky lit up like daylight because of the exploding transformers.

The man and the child in the car were taken to a local hospital, where the man is under police watch.

The driver's name has not yet been released, but the charges against him will likely be enhanced because of the child in the car, according to police.

That child, a boy between the ages of 5 and 10 years old, was not seriously hurt, according to Wylie police.
