Resident Shoots, Kills Would-Be Robber in Northeast Dallas

The shooting happened after 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 5600 block of SMU Boulevard

One person is dead after being shot during an attempted robbery outside a Northeast Dallas apartment complex Tuesday night, police say.

The shooting happened after 9 p.m. Tuesday outside Mockingbird Flats in the 5600 block of SMU Boulevard, just east of Central Expressway, according to Dallas police.

Police said the resident who fired the deadly shot also sustained a gunshot wound, but was in stable condition. The resident was later identified by police as 26-year-old Justin McNeely.

Police said McNeely admitted to shooting the man, who hasn't been identified, during a botched robbery attempt. Investigators said physical evidence supported McNeely's description of what had happened.

McNeely was released form custody with his case being referred to a grand jury.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
