Police: “Nosy” Neighbor Helps Nab Burglary Suspects

Neighbor called police, homeowners after seeing two people in yard

Dallas police credit a curious neighbor with helping officers catch two teenagers suspected of burglary.

A woman on Espanola Drive spotted two people jumping the fence of her neighbor's yard at about lunchtime on Monday.

The woman, who asked not to be identified because she feared retaliation, called police and the homeowners, who were both at work.

Police officers responded in a matter of minutes and caught the two teenagers.

"The criminal is not going to commit a crime if there is a police officer in the neighborhood," Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse said. "What they don't anticipate is the nosy neighbor or the 'Mrs. Kravitz-type.'"

Mrs. Kravitz was the nosy neighbor on the classic TV comedy "Bewitched" who often looked through her windows at her neighbors' home.

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy and his 19-year-old sister in connection with the burglary.

"They took two PlayStations, two GameBoys and a gold chain," homeowner Rosalinda Ramos said.

But the Ramos family got of the items back, thanks to their curious neighbor.

"I'm really glad that there are people around to help," Ramos said.

Police said the 19-year-old is being held in the Dallas County Jail on burglary charges. Her brother, who police said tried running from them, is in a juvenile detention center.
