Police Opposition Stalls Open Carry Handgun Bill

Fierce opposition from police across the state derailed efforts to pass a bill that allows open carry of handguns on the streets of Texas.

The bill appeared ready to pass the House and be sent to Gov. Greg Abbott to sign into law.

But law enforcement groups rallied strong opposition Wednesday, demanding lawmakers take out a provision that restricts police powers to question people carrying weapons.

House lawmakers were swayed by their concerns and instead decided to negotiate a new version of the bill with the Senate.

The delay could prove costly for one of the major gun rights bills of the session, which concludes June 1.

Conservatives say Texans should not be stopped for law-abiding activity.
