Police: Fort Worth Man Barricaded in Home

Police said they're preparing to charge a man who barricaded himself in his Fort Worth house with an explosive Saturday morning.

A witness went to a police substation at about 5 a.m. and told them a "possibly unstable" man in his 30s was at the home in the 5400 block of Whitman Avenue with what appeared to be bomb-making materials, according to police.

Tactical officers surrounded the residence and evacuated several neighboring homes as a precaution, according to authorities.

Police negotiators were able to speak with the man and convince him to come out of the residence peacefully, authorities said. Police took the man into custody without further incident. The man was taken to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Fort Worth Fire Department arson investigators searched the residence and lifted the evacuations. They are still investigating the crime scene, officials said.

Fire Department Lt. Kyle Falkner told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram that authorities obtained a warrant for the man's arrest Sunday night and are preparing to file a charge of possessing an explosive weapon. Police took the man into custody on Saturday after a standoff.

The man's identity has not yet been released.
