Police Dog Killed Trying to Stop Armed Suspect: Sheriff

Authorities in San Antonio say a police dog was shot and killed by a suspect who himself is now in critical condition after the shootout.

WOAI-TV reports that the suspect fled after police in Karnes City tried to pull him over to serve warrants for his arrest. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the suspect ditched his truck on a highway and began walking down the road, firing shots at officers and a circling helicopter.

Sheriff's deputies sent 5-year-old Chucky to stop the suspect. Salazar says Chucky bit the man, who fired several shots at the dog. Deputies and state troopers then fired at the man, taking him down.

Salazar says Chucky "went out doing what he was brought here to do ... to save lives."

The sheriff tells WOAI the suspect could face several charges but the no charges have officially been filed. As of this writing the suspect is in critical condition at University Hospital.
