3 Killed in Chain-Reaction Crash on Interstate 35 in Waco: Police

A fiery crash involving four tractor-trailers and two passenger vehicles in Waco killed three people and closed northbound Interstate 35 for hours Tuesday.

The crash happened at about 2 p.m. on I-35 at Spur 396.

Witnesses said a tractor-trailer and two cars were slowing when another semi slammed into the cars from behind, causing at least one to erupt into flames.

Two people seen trying to escape the debris were unable to crawl to safety before the vehicles exploded.

Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said vehicles were mangled so severely that it was unclear if all occupants are accounted for.

I-35 was closed for two hours before the southbound lanes were reopened.

Swanton expected the northbound lanes to remain closed until early Wednesday.

Texas Department of Transportation crews checked an interstate overpass for structural damage after the crash, though it is not clear what they found.
