Thousands of tickets are written each year to drivers in Plano school zones.
This year, police are on track to hand out even more than last year.
In 2014, Plano police issued a total of 4,867 traffic tickets in school zones. So far, more than 3,200 have been written in 2015.
"We're basically on pace to go well beyond what we wrote last year," said Plano police officer Andrae Smith.
The citations are for violations such as using a cell phone during certain hours, passing in a school zone and turning left when signs say you shouldn't.
But, by far, the most common type of ticket issued is for speeding, police say.
"We're trying to be in a position where we can slow people down, No. 1, visible, No. 2, slow people down, and No. 3, take enforcement action if necessary," Smith said.
