Pilot Survives Plane Crash, Cow Does Not

Pilot crashes on third attempt to land

A 65-year-old pilot survived the crash of his small plane into an East Texas pond in an accident that killed a cow in a pasture.

Mineola Emergency Management Coordinator David Stevenson said the crash happened Tuesday near Mineola's Wisener Airport.

Stevenson said the pilot was conscious and alert and was transported to a Tyler hospital.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Paul Noble identified the pilot as Johnny Hearon of Mineola. Witnesses said Hearon tried to land twice, and on the third attempt the plane stalled.

Stevenson said the single-engine Cessna apparently struck trees on the way down, then also hit the cow that was near the pond.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Mineola is about 80 miles east of Dallas.
