Perry to Visit Ike-Damaged Galveston Friday

Gov. Rick Perry will visit Hurricane Ike-devastated Galveston on Friday as the city seeks more recovery assistance.

Perry will address the initial meeting of his Commission for Disaster Recovery and Renewal, which was formed in the weeks after Ike made landfall Sept. 13.

Commission members, who begin the day by touring the island city to review the damage, are evaluating the state's role in recovery and preparations for future storms.

Chairman Robert Eckels told the Galveston County Daily News that panel members also are looking at ways to rebuild stronger communities.

Galveston-area residents will be invited to speak to the group.

A similar commission was formed by Perry after Hurricane Rita slammed Southeast Texas in September 2005.
