DNA evidence has led to a parolee arrested in November in a West Texas DWI case being charged with the 1983 slaying of a Fort Worth businessman.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports a capital murder charge was filed Thursday against 48-year-old Benjamin Bewley. His attorney had no immediate comment Friday.
Jail officials in Abilene say Bewley was being held on charges of driving while intoxicated, capital murder and without bond for parole violation.
Pawnshop owner Melvin Lavine was fatally shot in March 1983 when his house was robbed. Police working the cold case sent DNA evidence to a federal database and recently confirmed a match.
Bewley has drug, theft, burglary and weapons convictions. He was sentenced in 1992 to 20 years in prison for burglary and paroled in 2004.
