Two North Texans were arrested on charges of injury to a child on Friday.

An off-duty paramedic was called to the home of Justin and Brittany Alston in rural Hood County by a teenager who was visiting their home.

The Hood County Sheriff's Department said the teenager had discovered an 8-month-old baby was starving and living in bad conditions.

"In all my years as a police officer, I have never seen such a severe case of child neglect. It just breaks my heart to see a child in this condition and suffering this way," said Hood County Sheriff Deeds.

The baby was taken to Lake Granbury Medical Center for immediate treatment and is now in critical condition at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth.

An 18-month-old sibling was placed in foster care.

Justin and Brittany Alston, both 21, each are being held on $160,000 bonds. They each are charged with injury to a child and abandonment/endangerment of a child.
