One Hurt in Fiery South Texas Well Site Explosion

A fiery explosion at a South Texas oil well site has left one man with burns and part of a nearby highway closed as a precaution.

The Karnes County Sheriff's Office says the accident happened before dawn Tuesday near Gillett when some batteries, salt water containers and diesel tanks apparently exploded. Authorities are trying to determine what caused the blast in a rural area about 50 miles southeast of San Antonio.

A stretch of Highway 80 was shut down following the accident reported around 5 a.m. Tuesday. Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva says the fire died down after several hours but emergency personnel continued to monitor the site.

The injured man has been flown to a San Antonio hospital. His name and further details weren't immediately released.
