Oklahoma Crews Blast Boulders Along Interstate 35

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews are making dramatic progress in the effort to fully reopen a stretch of Interstate 35 that was closed last month due to a rock slide caused by torrential rain.

They detonated loose rocks Wednesday along an unstable cliff in the Arbuckle Mountains, where large boulders from the rock slide and standing water closed four miles of I-35 between North Texas and Oklahoma City.

Since the rock slide, one northbound lane and one southbound lane has been opened. However, the lanes are narrowed from U.S. Highway 77 at Mile Marker 51, south to Mile Marker 47, and the speed limit in the area is also down to 50 mph.

Interstate 35 is closed in south Oklahoma for a undetermined amount of time due to a rock slide.

Crews had been assessing boulders hanging precariously over the roadway, and on Wednesday they blasted the rocks loose.

The blasting plan was postponed from Tuesday because of weather.
