Man Faces Murder Charge After Fatal Shooting, Standoff in Greenville Monday

Motive for fatal shooting not yet known; investigation ongoing

A man suspected of fatally shooting another man is in custody and facing a murder charge after barricading himself inside a home in Greenville Monday morning, police say.

Greenville police received a report of shots fired at about 2:25 a.m. in the 2900 block of Walnut Street, police said.

Officers arrived to find Demontre Diquincy Washington suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Washington was transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center where he later died.

The alleged shooter, police said, fled the scene and went into a nearby home on Walnut Street where he refused to surrender to police.

Nearly nine hours later, police said the incident had been resolved and that the person who had been barricaded inside the home surrendered and was in custody.

The suspected shooter, whose name has not yet been releaed, was charged with first-degree murder, police said.

A motive for the shooting has not yet been revealed.
