Officer Injured When Patrol Car Rear-Ended

Gas tank ruptures in early-morning crash

A Farmers Branch police officer was injured overnight Thursday after his patrol car was struck from behind during a traffic stop on LBJ Freeway.

The officer had just assisted the driver of an 18-wheeler and had returned to the squad car when the car was rear-ended by a passing vehicle.

The gas tank on the officer's Ford Crown Victoria ruptured in the collision, but the officer was able to start the fire suppression system before the tank caught fire.

The officer suffered minor injuries in the collision and was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas for observation.

The driver of the second car, who was later arrested, continued down an embankment after the collision and was not injured.

It is not yet known what charges, if any, the second driver will face.
