A Central Texas trooper has undergone surgery after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach following a workout at a gym while off-duty.
Department of Public Safety Trooper Felipe Garcia was transported to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan following the shooting Wednesday afternoon in Madisonville.
Trooper Jimmy Morgan says Garcia opened the door of his truck and his personal .22 caliber pistol fell out, hit the pavement and discharged. Morgan says Garcia had been listed in stable condition following surgery.
A DPS spokesman on Thursday declined to release Garcia's condition. Hospital officials Thursday did not immediately provide information on the condition of the 28-year-old trooper.
Nobody else was hurt.
