Oak Cliff Prepares for Dia De Los Muertos

Some people in North Texas are celebrating Halloween this weekend, but others are celebrating Dia De Los Muertos.

Though similar in appearance to Halloween, the Mexican tradition, known as “Day of the Dead,” is aimed at honoring late relatives and loved ones.

"Many times people confuse the two things," said Manuel Tellez, owner of Oak Cliff's Maroches bakery. "They are two different things. Dia De Los Muertos is more than a holiday."

Symbols of the day could be found throughout Oak Cliff on Halloween weekend. Customers at Tellez's bakery were greeted by alters and skeletons.

"It’s about remembering your ancestors," he said. The popular item on the menu: "Day of the Dead bread."

"The bread represents the ancestors we have lost," Tellez said.

The Oak Cliff Cultural Center scheduled a celebration to mark the tradition on Sunday, Nov. 1 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will be held in the 500 block of West 7th Street.
