Texas Connects Us: Nostalgia Drives Passion For Toy Collectors

We all had that one toy we loved as a kid. But for some us, that love of toys never stopped growing.

Once a year, the DFW G.I. Joe and Action Figure Show takes over the Grapevine Convention Center.

It's a chance for fans to share their love for toys with others. Vendors come to buy and sell everything from classic G.I. Joes to figures from Star Wars, Transformers and Masters of the Universe.

"I've got lots of everything," said Keith Holmes, one of the organizers of the event.

Holmes's favorite toy is the G.I. Joe. It's something he loved playing with as a kid. Decades later, he's back to enjoying his favorite toy as a serious collector.

"It's a lot of nostalgia from growing up. As a young kid you had a role model and a friend that you played with everyday," Holmes said.

Gabriela Reyna goes as far as dressing up as her favorite comic book character when she comes out for these events.

"Now that I have the money and the time, I can play with the stuff I wanted to have when I was little," Reyna said. "And at the same time it brings good memories."

For those who attend, it's the memories that drive their hobby and a chance to reconnect with those of the past while making new ones.

If you're interested in the joining G.I. Joe enthusiasts, the DFW G.I. Joe Collector's Club meets monthly.
