The crash occurred at about 3:15 p.m. near the exit for Legacy Drive, where investigators said a tractor trailer was parked on the right shoulder.

Police said an SUV with two occupants was traveling at highway speeds on the shoulder when the driver tried to swerve into traffic to avoid striking the tractor trailer.

The right front of the SUV hit the left rear of the tractor trailer, shearing the passenger door from the SUV.

The SUV was then struck by a Lincoln Navigator traveling in the right lane, and the impact killed the passenger in the first SUV — later identified as Carolyn Connelly Hlozek.

Both vehicles then struck a third vehicle, which had a woman driver and eight-month-old passenger, causing that vehicle to roll twice.

The driver of the first SUV was transported from the scene with critical injuries, police said.

The occupants of the other two vehicles involved – including the young child – were transported as a precaution, all in good condition.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

The northbound lanes of U.S. 75 reopened after 7 p.m.
