The lanes had been closed for more than two hours Thursday afternoon, with traffic diverted onto the service road and U.S. Highway 287.
TxDOT crews brought in a large crane to lift the sign and remove it from the road, setting it on the shoulder of IH-820 so traffic could reopen.

There is no word on whether any vehicles were struck by the falling sign.
The southbound IH-820 lanes remained open, but traffic was slow due to onlookers.
