North Texas Welcomes Home Michelle Carter

The "Shot Diva" comes home after winning her first Olympic gold medal

North Texas welcomed home a local Olympian and gold medalist Friday morning.

Known as the "Shot Diva," Michelle Carter arrived at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport just before 9 a.m. after winning her first Olympic gold medal in women's shot put.

"Right now, I still can't believe what's going on, but I'm glad to be home and have all my family and friends come out and support me," Carter said.

Carter's gold medal performance last Friday earned the first gold by an American woman in the event and the second medal of all-time. The throw measured 67' 8.25".

The 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio was the third Olympic event for Carter, an Ovilla native and University of Texas graduate.

Carter is the daughter of former Southern Methodist University football player Michael Carter, who won a silver medal in the shot put at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers.
