North Texas Schools Keep Kids Inside for Eclipse Safety

As if the first day of school wasn’t filled with enough experiences, Monday’s eclipse added an extra element of excitement.

Some North Texas school districts are taking special precautions to make sure students can safely watch the eclipse without the risk of damaging their eyes.

Many schools and school districts sent letters to parents in advance of the first day of school.

Fort Worth Independent School District issued a flier to parents, teachers and principals. There are some classes that will view the eclipse as a part of the day, but have taken the proper precautions. Limiting outside activity was encouraged during the time of the eclipse with a request to monitor curious students.

Some Arlington Independent School District schools may have activities planned, either outdoors with proper safety equipment or inside viewing the NASA live stream. Schools are asked to keep students inside if they don’t have activities planned so they don’t inadvertently look directly at the eclipse.

Grapevine Elementary School sent a letter home to parents saying administrators didn’t want the students to miss the experience, but the children will be kept inside during peak eclipse times. The school send NASA-provided resources to parents with warnings for children. Students will watch the official NASA feed from inside.

Prosper Independent School District sent a letter to parents saying eclipse glasses were ordered, but school officials were unable to verify they were safely ISO certified. While most students will watch the NASA livestream, a limited number of 8th grade students will have approved glasses and will watch the eclipse firsthand. Parents were given the chance to opt out. Other students will remain in classrooms during the passing period.
